Rural Florida Takes Center Stage

Team Suwannee had the opportunity to attend this year’s Florida Rural Economic Development Association (FREDA) Annual Conference – an event that continues to play an essential role in strengthening rural counties across the state.

The conference brought together over 400 professionals including economic development leaders, state and local officials, workforce experts, consultants, and partners from the public and private sectors. The mix of perspectives created a collaborative atmosphere focused on innovation, strategic planning, and the future of rural Florida.

Throughout the event, attendees heard from site selectors, power providers, and industry consultants who offered insight into emerging issues, opportunities, and challenges in the competitive landscape of economic development. These sessions provided valuable direction on how rural counties can continue to grow and create jobs.

We were also privileged to hear from several distinguished speakers, including Matt Swanson of Select Florida and Secretary of Commerce Alex Kelly. Their expertise and statewide perspective added meaningful depth to discussions around business recruitment, talent development, and Florida’s long-term economic strategy.

A highlight of the conference was the honor of hearing directly from Governor Ron DeSantis, who shared his commitment to supporting rural communities and their importance to the state. Jimmy Norris, Suwannee County’s Economic Development Director, proudly represents our region on the FREDA Board of Directors, which had the opportunity to take a photo with the Governor.

Overall, the FREDA conference was a valuable time of learning about industry trends, best practices, and collaborative approaches that will help shape the future of rural economic development in Florida. We look forward to applying these lessons as we continue working to support growth and opportunity in Suwannee County.
